Dated November 17, 1813--Probated March 27, 1822
In the name of the most merciful God, I, Elizabeth Powell of the County of Nelson and the State of Virginia,
being in sound mind, but considering the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death, thinking as I do some
arrangement indispensably nesessary as it respects my personal and land Estate, do make and publish this my
last Will and Testament, in manner and form following that is to say,
1st. believing as I do it will a violation of the divine law to separate amn and wife as it declared in the sacred
Code. I do therefore give and bequeath unto Lucas Powell, son of William Powell dec'd my Negro man Jack
at valuation, which amount will apply to the payment of my debts, which are or may be created, should there
be a surplus after discharging all my legal debts the half of which surplus, will be given to my daughter, Jane
Powell--
2nd, my girl Mary, I lend to my daughter Jane Powell her life time, at her death to be divided amoung
Rebecca Powell, Mary Powell and Sarah F. Powell, daughters of Benjamin and Jane Powells, to have and
hold the same forever.--
3rd, my negro woman Tempy and her youngest child Nathan, I give to my daughter Mary Powell forever in
fee simple and also I give my tract of land whereon I now live to my daughter Mary Powell and all the
appurtenances, to have and to hold her life time, after her death, the land and the appurtenances will legally
descend to her son Lucas Powell, to have and to hold the same forever--
4th, My Negro Girl Malinda I give to Elizabeth R. Powell, daughter of Jane and Benjamin Powell, to have
and to hold the same forever.
My other children not noticed as they are in better circimstaces and on reflection on my motives will not be
censured hereby revoking all form wills by me made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal, this 17th, day of November in the year of our Lord
eighteen hundred and thirteen.

At a Court held for Nelson County the 26th, day of Feb'y 1822, This ststrument of writing purporting to be
the last will and Testament of Elizabeth Powell dec'd, was this day exhibited in Court and proved by the oath
of nathaniel Powell, a subscribing witness thereto as to the personal Estate and thereupon the same admitted
to record and on the motion of Lucas Powell, administration of said Estate, is granted to him with this will
annexed, who made oath and together win Jno. W. Green and Spencer Falconer, his securities, entered into
and acknowledge Bond in the penalty of $5,000 with the condition required by law--

At a Court held for Nelson County the 27th, day of march 1822 this will was again produced into Court and
further proved by the oath of Jno. Kennedy and ordered to be recorded.

Widow Cowper, she had 5 daughters and 2 sons, when she married Lucas
Powell, their marriage was about 1776. Lucas became guardian of younger said children about 1779,
thus they could have been married closer to 1779.]
