William Frazier Reynolds' Death in Chicago

William Frazier Reynolds died in Chicago under what some might consider mysterious circumstances.  The following information was discovered in a letter written by a J.B. McAllister in Lexington, Texas on April 13, 1909 to the Honorable Quinten Watson in Austin.  Rebecca Reynolds, the widow of W.F., was applying for a Confederate Widow's Pension but could not find any of her husband's papers to verify his serving in the Confederate Cavalry.

In the letter requesting that Mr. Watson get the number of W.F. Reynolds' pension application, he included the following information in his letter.

"-you remember that Mr. Reynolds was killed in Chicago by falling through an air shaft at (the name of the hotel is illegible)"

After continued research, I have found the article reported in the Chicago Tribune the day following W. F. Reynolds's death.  According to the newspaper article, Sheriff J. S. Scarboroug and a group of Texans, including W.F., went to Chicago to appear at a hearing of a Patrick Lavin, also known as "Cyclone Pat", a cohort of a "Mike" Coleman, killed by the sheriff in Texas after these men robbed the Dime Box post office on May 19, 1906.  Lavin was fighting extradition to Texas for the burglary.  Scarborough had taken the witnesses to Chicago to prove that Lavin had been seen in the vicinity of Lexington in the company of "Mike" Coleman just prior to the robbery.

W.F. fell from his room on the sixth floor of the Grace Hotel the morning of June 19, 1906 and was instantly killed.  The sheriff thought it a strange coincidence since he had been warned that attempts might be made on the lives of his witnesses.  He had requested special protection for them while in Chicago.  But evidence at the inquest by Thomas Largent, a member of the Texas party was that "Reynolds went to the window and fell out."  After conducting his own investigation, Sheriff Scarborough informed the coroner that he also believed that the death was accidental.  The body was to be taken back to Texas that same night (June 20).

This is Rebecca Marie Lowerre, daughter of Samuel W. Lowerre and Rebecca Frazee. According to the personal Bible records of her parents she was born 1 Aug 1837 (I know her tombstone says 1836).

She married "A. Wheatley" on 16 Jun 1856 in Alligar, Jamaica, NY" (again from the Bible records). They divorced ABOUT 1865 in New York, New York (not in the Bible records).

She married William Frazier Reynolds 3 Apr 1866 in Brooklyn, NY (date from her pension application). He died 19 Jun 1908 in Chicago, IL where he had gone with others to identify a man possibly involved in a burglary in Dime Box, TX. He accidentally fell from his hotel room. He was brought back home for burial.
