Katherine Louise Seewald

Katherine Louise "Katie" Lynn Seewald, 78, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Llano Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Perry Hunsaker, associate pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street.

Mrs. Seewald was born Oct. 20, 1922, in Hall County, Estelline. She grew up nearby in Collingsworth County, Wellington, the only child of William H. Lynn and Amy Brewer.

She was a member of the first graduating class of the University of Texas, new College of Fine Arts in 1943. During the remainder of World War II, Katherine, always known as "Katie," was a vacation relief agent for Trans World Airlines.

In July of 1947, she and Hughes Seewald, who preceded her in death, married at Tucumcari, N.M.

Mrs. Seewald was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Amarillo Junior League, the Texas Archeological Society, as well as a life member and former director of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Society. She served on numerous boards such as the Potter County Historical Commission and the Texas Historical Foundation in furtherance of her long commitment to historic preservation.

Mrs. Seewald attended the 1952 Republican convention in Chicago as an Eisenhower delegate. Her part helping Eisenhower secure the nomination led to a lifelong participation in Republican politics and a commitment to bring two-party politics to the state of Texas. Katie was a founding member of the local Republican Women's Club. She served on the board of directors of the Dallas Opera.

Mrs. Seewald's father, an early Panhandle banker, who went on to become the general manager of Lafayette Hughes' ranching properties in the southeast Texas Panhandle. Her mother briefly taught school in Estelline upon settling in this area. Amy Lynn was active in the Texas Fine Arts Association as an artist, as well as a professional portraitist.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Louise Seewald of Amarillo; a son, William Hughes Seewald of Amarillo; a grandson, Jacob Seewald McKinney of Austin; and a son-in-law, Johnny W. Micou of Amarillo.

The family suggests memorials in lieu of flowers to Panhandle Planned Parenthood; the Humane Society; the Animal Rescue Shelter; or a favorite charity.
