From David Blaine: I received the information I requested from the Bryan Library in West Point, Clay Co., Ms. They also sent me some articles that appeared in the History of Clay County, Mississippi, copyright 1988. Thought I would type and send to you. Brewers are referenced. With all your research you probably already have this but just in case. Article # A401 James Allen and Martha A. Howard. James Allen II was born in Chickasaw County in 1852, the son of Irish immigrants, James Allen I and Nancy Carlisle. James I was born in County Limerick Ireland in 1813-14 and Nancy Carlisle was born in County Antrim Ireland in 1811. The first record we have of them is their marriage license issued in Monroe County, Mississippi, in 1845. James had one and possibly two brothers who came to America with him but nothing is known of them. Nancy had half brothers, Adam. John, William and Henry Carlisle and a half sister Mary Ann Carlisle who all lived close by in Chickasaw, Clay and Monroe Counties. James and Nancy had three children: Catherine who married William J. Henley and lived at Egypt; John who married Fanny Haughton, lived for a time at Egypt and eventually settled at Meridian: and James II, my grandfather. James II married Martha A. ("Mattie") Howard, daughter of William Riley Howard and HARRIETT BREWER. Mattie was born in Fayette County Alabama, in 1858. She came to Cairo, now in Clay County, when she was two years old. The family then moved to Chickasaw County where she married Jamess Allen in 1880. Mattie's forebears, unlike James' Irish immigrant parents, had been in America since the early 1600's. Her ninth generation grandfather JOHN BREWER, had been a member of the House of Burgesses in colonial Virginia in 1629-30. From Virginia the BREWERS migrated to Orange County, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Monroe County, Mississippi in 1820 and to Fayette County, Alabama by 1830. Mattie was born in that part of Fayette County that is now Lamar County. Mattie's paternal grandparents were John Howard from Tennessee and Rachel Stogdon-Stockton from Kentucky. On the 1850 census for Fayette County, Alabama, they were in the same neighborhood as the BREWERS. Mattie's siblings were: Penelope ("Neppie") who lived to an advanced age but never married; Luther who married Betty Baker; John who married twice, 1) Georgia Millsaps and (2) Mrs. Ada Harrington Spears; Lee who married Rinda Miller;; Ida who married Andrew Jackson Haughton and lived in West Point; and William about whom nothing is known. James II and Mattie had eleven children, two of whom died as infants. The other nine were: Johnny who died unmarried at age 19; Nancy who married Thomas V. Harris; James Lawrence ("Eaph") who married Guyta Foster; Walton Joseph ("Jake") my father, who married Valeria Smith; Mary who married Claud Bean; Hattie Catherine who was a nun and died young; Rose who married Trammel Barrett; Arthur ("Bunk") who never married and Roy who married Leslie Awtrey. The only children of James and Mattie who stayed in Clay County were "Bunk" and Roy. This was written by James Walton Allen
