Mrs. Florence Smith Harrington, age 82, of Houston, died Tuesday, September 3 at Northeast Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 5 at Houston Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Norris officiating. Burial was in Prospect cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Frances Reese and Mrs. Cora Lee Weaver, both of Houston and Mrs. Betty Jane Griffin of Los Angeles, California; four sons, Rex W Harrington, Sr of Houston, James Edwin Harrington of New Hebron, Deedy Harrington and Jimmy Harrington, both of Aberdeen; 25 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were Stevie Harrington, Barry Weaver, Jodie Harrington, Bubba Harrington, Pat Harrington and Chess Harrington. Active pallbearers were Rex W. Harrington, JR., Lee Harrington, Danny F Weaver, Hap Harrington, Jamie Harrington and Kenny Weaver.

Houston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

US Congressman. Frank Smith was a US representative from the state of Mississippi. He was a member of the democratic party, elected to the 82nd and five additional succeeding congresses. He served from January 3, 1951 until he resigned on November 14, 1962. In 1964 he wrote his book, 'Congressman From Mississippi,' which discussed his political and racial views. Smith graduated from what is now Moorhead Junior College in Moorhead, Mississippi in 1936 and from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi in 1941. He entered the United States army on February 9, 1942. Smith attended and graduated from field artillery officer's candidate school, serving in Europe as captain with the third army, 243rd field artillery battalion, and receiving his discharge as a major. In 1946 and 1947 he was managing editor of the Greenwood Morning Call newspaper in Greenwood, Mississippi. From 1947 until 1949 he served as a legislative assistant to US senator John Stennis. From 1948 to 1950 he served in the Mississippi state senate. Additional positions and offices included serving as a member of the Tennessee Valley Authority board of directors and as a special assistant to Governor William Winter of Mississippi. Services for Gordon Lee Smith of Greenwood will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith, 90, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at Indywood Glen in Greenwood.

Mr. Smith was born in Sidon on Sept. 28, 1917, the son of the late Hattie Lee and Ocie Ola Smith. He attended school in Sidon and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1934. After graduation, he attended Sunflower Junior College in Moorhead for two years, where he was a member of a state champion baseball team his sophomore year. He then entered the University of Mississippi where he attained a law degree in August of 1939. While attending Ole Miss, he played on the baseball team as a pitcher and first baseman.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Ole Miss Alumni Association and "M" Club.

He practiced law in Greenwood until his appointment as special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation where he served from 1941 until 1949. He returned to Greenwood where he practiced law and was an attorney with the Billups Petroleum Company and coached Little League Baseball when it was first organized in Greenwood. He also served as a state senator from the 27th District from 1956 to 1960 which included Leflore and Tallahatchie counties. Following his legislative services, he was appointed general counsel for the Mississippi Employment Security Commission. He later was appointed regional counsel for the Small Business Administration, where he served 16 years until his retirement in 1979. He was a communicant of the Church of Nativity in Greenwood.

After his retirement, Mr. Smith had many hobbies, including golf, stamp collecting, bridge, gardening and enjoying his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ocie Brown Smith, Douglas Irving Smith, and his sister, Lillian Smith Dunn.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Annie Lewis Myrick Smith of Greenwood; his daughter, Lilliam Smith Myer and her husband, John, of Friendswood, Texas; his son, Gordon Myrick Smith and his wife, Jana, of Jackson; and four grandchildren, John Wilson Myer and his wife, Christina, of Friendswood, Texas, Claire Smith Belknap and her husband, Charles, of Jackson, Catherina Myer Mader and her husband, Will, of West Columbia, Texas, and Natalie Rebekah Smith of Birmingham, Ala.

Visitation is from noon until the time of the service Thursday at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home.

The Rev. R.H. Craig Gates and the Rev. Matt Rowe will officiate at the services. Pallbearers will be Harry Roland, D.I. Smith, Barry Smith, Wayne Pittman, Jim Dunn and Grady Perkins.

Wilson and Knight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Burial will be in Sidon Cemetery.

ANNIE LEWIS MYRICK SMITH

Mrs. Gordon L. Smith, 95, retired teacher, died on November 5, 2013 at the Greenwood Leflore hospital.

She was born September 11, 1918, in Greenwood. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Greenwood High School (1936) and Mississippi State College for Women (1940).

She began her teaching career in Sidon, MS and taught 22 years at Greenwood Junior High School. Her life was spent in dedication to her husband, family and friends.

Mrs. Smith was a life-long devoted member of the Church of the Nativity, a member of the Chakchiuma Chapter of D.A.R., a member of the Four Seasons Garden Club, a member of the One or None Breast Cancer Survivor Group, and a former member of the Greenwood Junior Auxiliary. After retiring from teaching, she was a substitute teacher and a volunteer at the Greenwood Leflore Hospital and Cottonlandia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Myrick of Greenwood, and her husband of 66 years, Gordon L. Smith.

She is survived by her daughter, Lillian Smith Myer and husband John of Friendswood, TX; her son, Gordon Myrick Smith and wife Jana of Madison, MS; four grandchildren, John Wilson Myer and wife Christina of Friendswood, TX, Claire Smith Belknap and husband Charles of Hattiesburg, MS, Catherine Myer Mader and husband Will of West Columbia, TX and Natalie Smith Borland and husband Patton of Birmingham, AL; three great grandchildren, John William Mader and James Ryan Mader of West Columbia, TX and Katherine Myrick Belknap of Hattiesburg, MS; a sister, Catherine Martin of Ridgeland MS; a brother, Edwin K. Myrick, Jr. of Memphis, TN; and nine nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the employees of Indywood Glen for their dedicated service and care during her stay with them.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 9, 2013 at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Greenwood. Visitation will be prior to the funeral beginning at 1:00 P.M. Burial will be at the Sidon Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Harry Roland, Barry Smith, Wilson Myer, Will Mader, Charles Belknap, and Patton Borland.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Episcopal Church of the Nativity and the Sidon Cemetery Association.
