DOCUMENTATION COUSIN MARY LOIS IVEY? HE WAS BORN IN DINWIDDIE COUNTY, VA.,CAME TO ALABAMA BY WAY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, N.C., AND TENNESSEE. FAMILY TRADTION SAYS HE FOUGHT IN THE AM. REVOLUTION,NO RECORDS TO SUSTANTIATE THIS. HER FATHER (JESSE IVEY EDWARDS), SAW AN OLD LETTER WRITTEN BY DAVID IN 1809 WHEN HE WAS SERVING IN THE TENN. MILITIA FIGHTING INDIANS. NO ONE KNOWS WHO HAS LETTER NOW OR IF IT SURVIVED. HE CAME TO ALABAMA ABOUT 1816 WITH HIS SECOND WIFE (ELIABETH SPEARS) AND SONS ISSAC,ZACHARIAH AND MALACHIA(TWINS). THEY SETTLED A PLANTATION OF SEVERAL THOUSAND ACRES AND ABOUT 200 SLAVES IN LOUNDES COUNTY NEAR WHITEHALL,AL. PROPERTY WAS ENTERED IN THE US LANDS RECORDS ON 26 0CT.1818; WE ARE DESCENDED FROM HIS SECOND WIFE, ELIZABETH SPEARS. HIS FIRST THREE CHILDREN WERE BY THE FIRST WIFE,LUCY WEATHERS .SHE HAS A PICTURE OF DAVID"S TOMESTONE AT THE SITE OF THE OLD FAMILY HOMESITE IN LOUNDES CO.(1969) TOMESTONES ARE IN GOOD SHAPE EXCEPT FOR ZACHARIAH'S (IN TWO PIECES) IN 1816-1818 WHEN THEY ORIGINALLY CAME TO LOWNDES CO. ALA., THEY FLOATED DOWN THE ALABAMA RIVER ON A RAFT. THEY SETTLED 2000 ACRES IN A BEND IN THE RIVER. THEY HAD ABOUT 200 SLAVES. THE AREA WAS STILL POPULATED WTIH INDIANS. ACTUALLY THEY WERE "SQUATTERS". THE FIRST LAND GRANT WAS ENTERED ON OCT. 20,1818 TO ISSAC P. EDWARDS. THERE IS NO PROOF THAT LAST NAME OF DAVIDS 2ND WIFE WAS SPEARS. THER IS A MARRIAGE RECORD ON FILE FOR ONE DAVID EDWARDS AND ELIZABETH ANDRES OR ANDERS, MARRIED AUG.28, 1792 IN ORANGE CO. N.C. ON JUNE 29, 1974 AN EDWARDS FAMILY REUNION WAS HELD AT THE SITE OF THE FAMILY PLANTATION WHICH AJOINS THE ALABAMA RIVER AT WHITEHALL, LOUNDES CO. ALA. ROBERT HALE GOLDSMITH DEEDED THE EDWARDS CEMETARY TO THE EDWARDS HEIRS. RECORDED IN DEED BOOK GGG P.546-547. THANKS TO EFFORTS OF ROSA LYONS TRAYLOR THE CEMETARY HAS BEEN CLEARED OF BRUSH AND TREES.

The following death notice was copied as it was in print in the Saturday, June 1, 1889 edition of The Lampasas Leader. Contribution by FAG member Sue Lilley. Original photocopy work by Jeff Jackson. "Mr. W. T. Edwards, of Millican, Tex., died here on Saturday night at the residence of Judge W. T. Abbott, of Bright's Disease. Deceased was a brother of Mrs. Abbott and uncle of H. P. Edwards, of this city. He came here a few weeks ago from Arizona, hoping to obtain relief from a course of the waters, but his disease had made too much progress. He was buried with Masonic honors and his funeral was largely attended. His relatives have the sympathy of the community."
